Condoms spread HIV: Archbishop
September 28, 2007
MOZAMBIQUE'S Roman Catholic Archbishop has accused European condom manufacturers of deliberately infecting their products with HIV "in order to finish quickly the African people".

The Archbishop of Maputo, Francisco Chimoio, told the BBC that he had specific information about a plot to kill off Africans.

"I know that there are two countries in Europe … making condoms with the virus, on purpose," he alleged. He refused to name the countries.

He added: "They want to finish with the African people. This is the program. They want to colonise until up to now. If we are not careful we will finish in one century's time."

His views have prompted outrage from activists trying to combat AIDS and help sufferers. They described the statements as ridiculous. Medical specialists said it was impossible for the AIDS virus to live inside condoms for any length of time.

Marcella Mahanjane, a prominent Mozambican activist, told the BBC that there was no evidence to back the Archbishop's claims. "We've been using condoms for years now, and we still find them safe," she said.

The Archbishop's comments are likely to undermine the Mozambique Government's campaign to educate people aboutAIDS in a country where about one in six of the 19 million citizens are HIV-positive.

Health specialists say that views contrary to scientific orthodoxyare frequently seized upon by people looking for a reason not to use condoms.

The Archbishop is widely respected in Mozambique, in part because of the leading role he played in brokering a peace deal to end a 16-year civil war in 1992.

The Catholic Church has resisted pressure to amend its opposition to the use of condoms despite the AIDS pandemic. Archbishop Chimoio told the BBC that abstinence was the best way to fight HIV/AIDS.

"If we want to change the situation to face HIV/AIDS it's necessary to have a new mentality. If we don't change (that) mentality we'll be finished quickly," he said.

"It means marriage, people being faithful to their wives … (and) young people must be abstaining from sexual relations."

The Archbishop's comments echo the scepticism over AIDS found among leaders in other parts of Africa. In neighbouring South Africa the President, Thabo Mbeki, has questioned the link between HIV and AIDS and suggested that antiretroviral drugs are so poisonous they are more dangerous than the disease.
I realise that this thread won't do anything but incite "wtf?" comments, and I don't normally like to create them to begin with, but I just found it so shocking.

Such a step backward when it comes to educating Africa about AIDS. It's really quite disappointing.

Well uh, in his defense (if possible), he is trying to educate abstinance which would do well to prevent the spread of HIV.

Man's still an idiot though, obviously. condoms for all!

WHO Murdered Africa
The Greatest Murder Mystery of all Time

There is no question mark after the title of this article because the title is not a question. It's a declarative statement. WHO, the World Health Organization, murdered Africa with the AIDS virus. Thats a provocative statement, isn't it?

The answers to this little mystery, Murder on the WHO Express will be quite clear to you by the end of this report. You will also understand why the other suspects, the homosexuals, the green monkey and the Haitians, were only pawns in this virocidal attack on the non-Communist world. If you believe the government propaganda that AIDS is hard to catch then you are going to die even sooner than the rest of us. The common cold is a virus. Have you ever had a cold? How did you catch it? You don't really know, do you? If the cold virus was fatal, How many people would be left
in the world?

...]The AIDS virus didn't come from Africa, it came from Fort Detrick, Maryland, U.S.A.

why do we care so much about what a bishop, out of all people, from a country no one has heard of, has to say? he is the least of our worries.

Perhaps- try to stay with me on this one- people actually care about people other than themselves?

Yeah, I understand that he may be trying to promote abstinence as the best way of preventing HIV/AIDS (which is true, because it's the only "contraceptive" method that has a 100% success rate), but to say that condoms spread HIV/AIDS is ridiculously untrue. Sounds like a man who's either really ignorant or trying to take advantage of all the uneducated people who will listen to him.

^ quite possibly.

re black cat - that bishop has no proof, no academic background, comes out and says something ridiculous, and gets on the news just because he is a religious figure.

did he mention god is black? he might get on the front page.

That's not what I meant. The point is, he is an important role model for the people there, so they are going to listen to what he says, and this may hold grave implications for the country. People are working so hard to combat and educate about HIV and AIDS, and this will just undo the progress so far.

He has no proof because the fucking HIV virus can't live outside of the body for more than a few minutes let alone in a condom shipped to Africa from Europe. :)
