UWS welcomes Government promise of extra funds

Date: 20/09/2004

The University of Western Sydney has welcomed yesterday's announcement by Prime Minister John Howard of a $25m funding package for UWS.

The extra money would go towards more teaching facilities at the Parramatta Campus, extending library services at the Penrith Campus, more assistance with research infrastructure at the Hawkesbury Campus, and setting up biomedical facilities for the new medical program at Campbelltown.

UWS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid, says the promised funds would help the University upgrade its teaching and research facilities to ensure they are state-of-the-art.

"This funding would be a great boost to our teaching programs on the Parramatta and Penrith Campuses; our scientific research and development at the Hawkesbury Campus; and our health and biomedical campus at Campbelltown," Professor Reid says.

"It is clear that the Prime Minister and our local members understand the enormous potential for educational and economical growth in Greater Western Sydney.

"Funding of this order would accelerate the University's development and capacity to meet the needs of current and future students, our partner industries and agencies across the West," Professor Reid says.
