Two days after handing down his second budget, NSW Treasurer Michael Costa has been thrown out of parliament for refusing to withdraw comments directed at an opposition frontbencher.
During upper house question time on Thursday, Mr Costa rose to answer a question from Christian Democrat MP Fred Nile regarding a taxi levy for passengers picked up at Sydney Airport.
But he used the start of his reply to attack opposition treasury spokesman Greg Pearce's defence of federal Treasurer Peter Costello, who has refused to pay the NSW government $400 million in property tax.
"I thought he was going to ask me about Peter Costello refusing to pay his taxes ... Peter the dodger is out there dodging his tax responsibilities," Mr Costa told parliament.
"I noticed the honourable Greg Pearce was supporting him in dodging taxes."
Mr Pearce interjected, asking Legislative Council President Peter Primrose to instruct the treasurer to withdraw the comment that he supported tax dodgers.
But Mr Costa refused to do so, forcing Mr Primrose to order the treasurer be escorted from the parliament until the end of question time.
"This is a serious matter and I do take it very, very seriously," Mr Primrose said.
"I've determined the honourable Michael Costa, in refusing to withdraw words which I have ruled as offensive, is guilty of gross disorder ... therefore I order of the Usher of the Black Rod to remove the member from the house until the end of question time."
