For my creative writing could I rewrite a famous story e.g. the wizard of oz however tell it in the perspective of another character e.g. the cowardly lion? and alter the story to include him discovering his courage?

Yeah you could, but don't give it away, make it subtle and when the marker/reader finds out what your drawing upon it comes as a surprise. If you can do this you're using the idea fine, but if it's bleeding obvious what your getting at and drawing upon the story becomes somewhat dull and anticipated which can take away from your appropriation of the classical text.

I wouldn't suggest it unless you are very proficient at creative writing. As the person above me said, you would have to do it subtly and with a high degree of complexity. Personally, I wouldn't risk it because it may come off as plagiarism and laziness on your part.
