ok, simply, could i say that in every crime fiction essay we are asked, we talk about:

the conventions of the genre
how the conventions are used to convey different values for the context they were made for
why these texts are valued in different contexts

so, its all about conventions, contexts, values and being valued???

A slightly more detailed list:

- disscusion of Genre (in genral)
- disscussion of Crime Fiction as a Genre
- conventions of Crime Fiction
- conventions of the sub-genres within CF (which includes the context-specific values)
- Subervision of the genre
- Question specific ideas:
eg: growth of the Genre (2002 essay question)

Just aside from your question, you'll find that a lot of the HSC English Ext 1 questions will require you to refer to context, values and the way texts are valued. Even if the question doesn't specifically mention these things it's always good to talk about them to display your understanding of the creation of the text.

Hrm. Have a look at the specimen papers and compare the questions in those to the sorts of questions you're getting at school. It'll be really general + will probably refer to conventions of the genre, but I wouldn't have a clue 'cause I didn't do it.

is it basically the values and conventions as revealed by the context?

No. Each response is spontaneous ...

That is part of it, but not all of it. You need to read the list I posted above AND the question given on the day ...
