An assessment question we have is:
"How is the notion of crime presented in the film the big sleep?"
- Complex plot of multiple crimes, leading to many revaltions and eventually some form of justice.
- Hard-boiled detective: drinker, smoker, charming, has a way with the ladies, witty.
- Film Noir used to highlight the contrast between good and evil.
- Metaphors used throught film to symbolise corrunption, sex and other elements of crime fiction.
- Background to main plot is social stories: pornography , gambling, etc.

These are just a few points.

Could you elaborate on those points a bit more? The word limit is 1000 words so it is rather hard to pick what is relevant. Teachers are absolutely no use at all.

What is the question really asking? Can one simply get rid of the word "notion" and still have the same meaning?

Thanks in advance.

You can't get rid of the word "notion". It means that the markers want you to look at the conventions of the genre, and so is kind of important.

As for expanding, can you tell which point/area in particular?

Ok thanks for clearing that up. It seems half the people have talked about how crime is presented, the rest have talked about TBS in relation to crime fiction and the conventions. I'm leaning towards the second one.

Would it work to go through the list of conventions of crime fiction and talk about how each one is represented or presented in TBS?

Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't go through the list saying "yeah" or "nay" to each, I would have paragraphs which talk about techniques, conventions and characters all linked together. "Listing" is never a good idea ...

TBS is a good example of growing cynicism in the US
The city is steeped in crime and all the crime going on in TBS shows that its a continuing cycle
Maybe your teach wants you to discuss this as well?
