How is this determined at uni? Is it a weighted cumulative mark of all of your assessments + final exam, or is it based on your ranking within the cohort? To me the former seems unfair as exams vary in difficulty, unless uni assessments are "aligned" as they are in the HSC.

Hm... from what I observed i think some course follows this "algorithm"

fugded assessment = fudge factor function A (assemenet marks, weighting A)
fugded mid-session = fudge factor function B (mid-session marks, weighting B)
fugded final exam = fudge factor function C (final exam, weighting C)

final marks = fudge factor function D (fugded assessment, fugded mid-session, fugded final)

as you might have aware, in uni there are no way to determine the fugde factor... ranking might influence the fudge factors because according to the university guidelines a course cannot fail too much people and there are certain number of people can get certain grade. In certain courses they can fail you even if you did all those exams and assessment but you failed practical or unsatisfactory lab components etc....

difficult exam will result in higher fudge factor for the exam part :D

Some subjects make the entire process transparent by giving you the formulae they use to calculate your final marks. Other times you might never see you final exam mark which means they can scale it in whatever way they like, other times they don't scale at all. It depends on the lecturer running the course.

Damn...isn't that kind of unfair?

Edit: Do they at least give you the weightings of each assessment?

They usually do give out the weightings of each assessment, but again the final mark is "scaled"..
