The Crucible
Some of the most powerful influences of an individuals sense of belonging is the beliefs and requirements of the groups they are involved in. In the ‘Crucible’ the community of Salem is a strict theocracy based on conforming and belonging to the Salem community. The influences of belonging can be seen in the episode ‘Dethkomedy’ from the show ‘Metalocalyspe’ the group Dethklok wanted to become comedians but failed and Pickles lost his sense of belonging to the group. Also the influences of belonging can are shown in the song ‘One’ by the thrash metal group ‘Metallica’ where a young man goes to war and loses all his abilities to communicate and he loses his sence of belong to the world.

The theocracy of Salem is based upon literal reading of the bible and directly following all the commandments of the bible like attending church every Sabbath and abstaining from work on the Sabbath. Reverend Hale says that “Theology is a fortress, no crack in the fortress may be accounted small,” referring to Abigail and the girls dancing being the crack that could bring down the fortress of Theology. John Proctor is an individual who did not care about belonging to the Salem community. Proctor believed that God has left the church and Proctor shows his hate and distrust of Reverend Paris when he says, “I come five miles to hear him preach only hellfire and bloody damnation. Take it to heart Mr Parris. There are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardly ever mention God any more.” Proctor chooses not to belong to Salem because he “sinned” with Parris’s niece Abigail Williams, and this causes him to see himself as a hypocrite and not worthy to belong to the Salem community. Danforth’s behaviour and attitudes in the court exclude Proctor from conforming to the court and led Proctor to tell the court that Abigail told him that the events in “the woods” were “sport” but court quickly turned on him and sees him as an enemy of God, and Danforth stated that “a person is either with the court or he must be counted against it”. When Proctor finds his wife, Elizabeth has been accused of witchcraft Proctor turns against the court and says “…I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face, and it is my face and yours Danforth,…God dams our kind especially we will burn together” as he is taken away for witchcraft. Proctor belonged to his own values and when he was offered to sign a false confession to save his life, he refuses to sign and makes peace with himself and saves his name for his children.

In the episode ‘Dethkomedy’ from the show ‘Metalocalyspe’ the band Dethklok wanted to change their focus from playing music to being comedians. At the groups first attempt at being comedians they failed miserably and were booed off the stage, severely traumatising “Pickles the Drummer” so he couldn’t perform anymore, so Pickles left the group. Meanwhile the rest of the group was taught how to be comedians. Pickles thought that because he couldn’t perform then he couldn’t belong to the group and he said “I couldn’t even play my douche bag drums anymore”. But the influence of not belonging to Dethklok led Pickles to returning to the group and they welcomed him back and they helped him get over his stage fright and helped him become a comedian so he could belong to the group again.

The song ‘One’ by the group ‘Metallica’ is about a young man called Johnny who went to World War II and was severely injured in an explosion of a shell. In the explosion Johnny lost both his arms and legs and also he lost his sight, his hearing, his ability to talk, his sense of smell and most of his memory. He felt like he couldn’t belong to anything because he couldn’t communicate in anyway except when he hit his head against the metal headrest of the bed, tapping his head in Morse Code. The influence of not belong led Johnny to wanting to die “Kill me, Kill me now” he tapped in Morse Code to the doctors so he could be taken away from his horrible life of no human contact.

The individuals sense of belonging is impacted by the groups that they are involved in. The theocracy of Salem in the ‘Crucible’ forced people to belong to the Salem community or they will be punished for their differences. In ‘Dethkomedy’ Pickles lost his sense of belonging because he couldn’t perform on stage but his sense of belonging changed because the group never excluded him but welcomed him back into the group and helped him get over his stage fright. And in ‘One’ Johnny lost his sense of belonging because he couldn’t communicate with anyone and he would have done anything to belong to any group, even die to belong to the dead.
