Cut-Offs Rising (1 Viewer)

I got 89.70 for my UAI-- last year to get into Arts at Sydney the cut-off was 86.5 and the year before it was 83.25, so there was a rise of 3.25 in the cut-off-- since more people achieved well this year and the lesser number of Hecs places available at Uni, does this mean that the cut-off is going to rise by a lot more this year?

Any thoughts? Because if it only rises by the same amount it did in the previous years, that means I miss out by only 0.25 of a mark... Is the UAI cut-off for Arts likely to rise by that much?? It seems 89 would be too high for just a plain Arts degree, but I don't know what to think. Because I got an awesome mark and achieved my goals but now I'm depressed that I might miss out.

Anyone got any ideas or insight into this type of thing?

It will only rise if the people that apply for the Arts course have in general a higher UAI than last years group.

And if 2004 generally had higher UAIs and more band 6s than previous years... it is very likely that those applying have higher UAIs and it will rise. Dammit.

Even if it does rise though its still not guaranteed to rise as much as last year.

yeah, i have the same problem with phsiotherapy it has gone at sydney uni from 94.3 or so up to 95.? last year right near what i got, so i could of got in last year but probably won't get in this year, shame hey.
It is manily based on the popularity of the course like since this was Olympic year sports related degrees will rise, other factors like the IT crash on stock market made IT related courses to drop considerably, also the 911 caused airline and pilot courses to drop as well. see you have to look at wide picture if some new breakthrough in that field or some new exciting thing making media attention which may change many people perferences as they go wow that looks interesting, arts well it shouldn't pass your mark because we havn't had any major art shows or anything in sydney this year, and is a very steady course really, and pay rises like teachers strikes and getting more pay made Early Childhood leap last year big time, harder to teach 6 year olds than to design the harbour bridge or buildings, or do scientific discovery .
The HEC at Sydney only covers 75% of cost now and the fees rised which may put people off going to Sydney Uni, and actually make alot of the courses go down, thats what i'm hoping.

Also sydney has always had the most first perference not this year UnSW did so means less people applied to Syd so should help

i dont think they will rise,

this year, fewer hsc students enrolled for the UAC,
lets just hope they happened to be the high achieving ones

apparently it isnt going to rise much because uni apps fell by 3% and govt is worried dat we're gettin dumber if our education crumbles

i got 96 and the 2003 cutoffs for b commerce/b arts at unsw was also 96...arghhh im praying to god it will stay the same or go down (very unlikely though)

hey out of curiousity.. seeing that Sydney uni closed their nursing faculty, do u think it's possible that the UAI will rise by more than 6 at UTS or UWS?

No. The UAI's remained the same (ie the number of people getting them) since it is a ranking. The marks required to get each UAI however, generally increased. It would depend on the number applying for each course, I think any decrease in HECS places (which isnt much) would be counterbalanced by the increase in fees so people would consider other unis.

The government contributes a set amount for each course to each university, this is independant of the HECS charged. Such as Engineering gets around $10 000 a year more funding per student then Law.

So a 25% increase to HECS just means that money will go towards the university and hopefully your course.

have you looked at flexible entry for sydney uni? if you did well in the subjects youll be specialising in, it could be a good option, at least to make sure you're safe with the cut off. the website has heaps about it, you just have to apply before 6th jan.

if u look at the uac book theyve got "predicted uai cutoffs" for 2005 - they say 95.
Dunno how likely that is cause commerce is popular. fingers crossed

Just bear in mind that everything here is pure speculation - the 'cut off' is merely the UAI of the last person admitted into the course.

For example, say a given degree has 300 places. 299 of those people could be achieving UAIs of 98+, and 1 person could get 50. For that course, the cutoff would be 50 - it's all about supply and demand.
