Did anyone see the people with Daily Telegraph shirts on at uni today? They were getting people to sign up for a free sunday paper, I think.
I was sitting in the food court by myself about 10 30ish and this exchange occured:

Me: *sitting at table in food court cos I couldn't find seat in library, reading and listening to music i.e, obviously occupied*
Woman: *sits down at seat opposite me* Hi, sorry to disturb you-
Me:*trying to sound not like a total bitch* I'm sorry, I know this is your job and everything, but I don't read the Telegraph, I don't like it, and I'm not a fan of businesses soliciting on campus so, thanks but no thanks
..........awkward silence.........
Woman: *in a really pissed off tone* It was just a free paper, it's your choice!
Me: Yes, it is.
*exit Telegraph woman*

I don't want to be a bitch to people, I tried to be nice, but ehhhh... people bugging me to sign up for stuff always rubs me the wrong way. Plus I was in the middle of a horribly complicated reading that required concentration.

Telemarketers don't get surprised if people hang up on them, I don't know why soliciting in person creates a different attitude of entitlement. Ah well, next time I'll look harder for a seat in the library.

Well I wasn't there to make appropriate comment on the intrusiveness of the telegraph person, BUT....

I think you very much over-reacted.

Firstly the paper was free. It was paid for by SAM. So if you have a problem with them simply offering you a free paper which youve indirectly paid for anyway, then thats your decision, but the telegraph person was obviously just doing what they were paid to do by SAM.

I hate it too when you have people trying to offer you things that you dont want, etc, and I especially hate it when they dont take no for no, but in this case it's a bit different. most people would not realise that it was for free. I mean subscription could cost hundreds of dollars, and they are giving it for free.

I think the problem was that she was disturbed. Earphones on and reading should have been enough to discourage her from approaching you.

She was a toss. Good job!

I love it when we get the chance to tell people off for being morons.

Yep, read where I said 'I know it's your job'....'. I know people don't do this for fun. People do all sorts of things for money.
But, you know, I wasn't rude, I didn't get upset. I clearly stated to her I didn't want what she was offering and that I didn't agree with the method of distribution (annoying the people who just want to read without being pressured to sign up for something cos it's omg free).

If they want to give the papers away so badly, just put signs up around uni that they're free at the Sam Shop. I don't care what they do to get rid of the things, as long as I can sit down in peace and do my EDUC260 readings.

I think you were polite enough about it, some people just get short about anything. She was probably getting all types of reactions from people. It could have been the same person who talked to me, I must have looked so perplexed that she picked up the paper and handed it to me and said 'take it.'
is your hair still pink or is it blonder now with a 'hint' of pink? if it is, were you wearing i think it was grey pants, backpack?

Yes to both..the school uniform thing was for the 264 group presentation, we all dressed up in school uniforms. I changed into my old Catholic high school long tartan skirt just after that and got the weirdest looks from people..it was pretty funny.
And yeah, I bleached my hair over the weekend and it hasn't fallen out yet and looks great (imho). I missed being blonde...heh.

Yeah well I was not there to be able to see it...

under ordinary circumstances I would question the right of a spruiker or some product to disturb anyone, let alone those who are clearly engaged in a book, or ipod.

I just know that this case has to be different because its a free subcription.

The daily telegraph is not a 'newspaper' that belongs in a university.

I think I get what you mean but eh..... just because something's free doesn't mean everyone automatically wants it. These people may have had a 'fantastic offer' for all uni students, but in my opinion it doesn't give them any special priviledges not afforded to regular spruikers.

Haha..yeah that's basically my opinion, although for cultural studies maybe it could be of use. Analysing how popular culture reinforces stereotypes etc...lol.

Meh. I think you did good, cpjeeves :) If she bothered you when you were obviously busy (as in, from a distance), then it's her bad. I don't know whether anyone here has done hand-out related jobs before, but there's a certain kind of ettiquette you have to have... if people are avoiding eye contact with you (and various related circumstances) then you don't bother them because their body language is already saying "GO AWAY!". :)

Haha, even if it WAS free, I'd probably turn down the Daily Telegraph....

It just doesn't cover up as well as the Sydney Morning on cold days on a bench

I think what you said was fair, and said nicely. Its not like you were blunt and horrible. I think it takes the edge off when you pad such a comment with "I know its your job" :)

Does anyone listen to Hack on JJJ? At QLD Uni Red Bull came in at the end of some engineering lecture and prattled on about some comp they had running. While I think the student who bitched about it was being a bit dramatic, I still think things like that are dodgy. And in lecture time. They could've been asking questions and other such exciting things rather than checking out the blonde bombshells in tiny red shirts.

I bet the boys grew wings :D .... or wing.

Heh.. yeah this Telegraph chick came up to my (male) friend and I, and asked if we wanted to sign up..

My friend said he already has the paper delivered..

Then she just said "ok" and left.. I mean, excuse me? Did I say I wasn't interested? Or was she coming up just to speak to my friend because he was a guy?

I dont like the daily telepgraph as much as any other uni student, but you must admit that its convinient size and tabliod journalism make it an interesting read.

On another note, you would have all noticed them at a table outside the same shop today. Perhaps this is the way they shouldve done it.

Although no-one persecuted jesus for sharing the word of god (ahem) so it's only fair that the same luxury be awarded to those who want to share the joys of a page 3 nude (unfortunately australia is unable to follow in the british way of thinking)
