Does anyone know of any that is not built in. I'd like 24 bit audio quality with 5.1 surround sound, preferably 7.1.

All I can think of right now is the Soundblaster Audigy 2, PCMCIA card. Any suggestions?

The PCMCIA card offers the best portability, what is the difference between the two? Like, if theres not too much difference, then I'd get the PCMCIA card instead of the usb. I'm going to be playing CD audio / DVD's mp3's using surround sound.

Oh and on that note, what is a good brand for surround sound speakers?

Creative will be releasing an ExpressCard-based X-Fi-series solution for notebooks soon.

Logitech Z-5500 : http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2,CONTENTID=9486

They can be had for < AU$400 and are some of the best speakers I've had the pleasure of listening to for the last year. I can't see myself replacing them any time soon :)

I'll vouch for the Z-5500's too. I've got the Z-5300's and the music, movies and games sound amazing on the X-Fi (especially with the 24-bit Crystallizer enabled).
