Hello,
I've been accepted into Law and Psychology.
Looking at structures for both degrees and I've realised the first unit for both degrees is a pre requisite for all of first year units.
So the degree planner says to do People and Planet units.
BUT WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO UNITS OUTSIDE MY DEGREE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER?????????????
Also looking at the possible People and Planet units , theres like none that don't have pre requisites, so how do I even choose units for the first semester?
Help anyone? How did you structure your first semester/year for law or psychology or both.
Thank you

It's not so much a question of why you'd want to, it's the fact that you have to. Every Macquarie student has to do both a People and a Planet unit, and the only time you will be able to fit that in, assuming you'll be sticking to the standard degree progression, is in your first year. Really, most People & Planet units are quite easy; they're certainly going to be much less of an intellectual strain then the law units you'll be doing. Consider it as a way of gradually introducing you to the academic rigours of university, before things step up in your later years.

As for your claim that all People & Planet units have prerequisites, that's simply not true. Virtually all the units at 100 level have no prerequisites whatsoever, and the ones at 200 or 300 level only have general prerequisites (as in you have to complete a certain number of non-specific credit points, which is understandable, seeing as they're supposed to be 2nd or 3rd year units).

But for you, seeing as the easiest option for your degree structure would be to do your People & Planet units in your first year, I would stick to the 100 level units.

Since you have to do those first two units before anything else in either degree, then yes you have no choice really but to do the People and Planet units in your first semester to fill up the gaps. And like Amleops said, every MQ student has to do that, it's like their interdisciplinary approach thing. So really it's not outside of your degree since completion of People and planet units are required to finish your degree. Just choose units that relate to what you wanna do after uni or whatever you're interested in.

And I've had a look at the list for people and planet units before and I didn't see a single one with prerequisites, so not entirely sure what you mean when you say that they all do.

I'd honestly just suggest going with the recommended first year plan that Macquarie sent you.
