Hey there!

To become a dentist you have to complete a degree that entitles you to apply for professional registration with the Dental Board. These degrees come in an assortment of different names (Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Doctor of Dental Surgery, Master of Dentistry, etc.). Essentially, they all do the same thing; qualify you to become a professional dentist.

There are 9 universities that offer such courses in Australia. The University of Adelaide, University of Queensland, James Cook Univeristy and Charles Sturt University offer 5-year undergraduate dental programs. La Trobe University and Griffith University offer 2 year postgraduate dental programs that are preceded by 3 year undergraduate health science degrees that you enter after Year 12. USyd, UniMelb, and UWA all offer 4-year postgraduate dental degrees that are preceded by 3 year undergraduate qualifications of your choice.

For all the undergraduate programs, entry is based on a combination of ATAR, the UMAT (except JCU), and an interview (except UQ). A high UMAT (90th percentile and above) and a 99+ ATAR should be sufficient for you to get an interview offer. For the postgrad programs, a high GPA in your undergrad degree plus a good result in the GAMSAT will get you an interview. Alternatively, a high ATAR (99-99.5+ depending on program) can net you a 'provisional' place in the postgrad course that is conditional on you getting a high enough GPA in your undergraduate degree.

All this is quite convoluted but the bottom line is this: 99+ ATAR and 90+ percentile UMAT (for undergrad courses) or a good GPA (high credit and above) + high GAMSAT (for postgrad courses), as well as good interview skills will get you into a dentistry course that will allow you to become a professional dentist. Expect it all to take between 5-7 years depending on the route you choose
