Hey

I think they are trying to ask how did the depression, in conjunction with other various events between 1919 and 1934, lead to the collapse of the weimar republic. So if i was writing that response, i would say that depression, as well as the partial nature of the army, the concept of 'incomplete democritisation' and also the appeal of the nazi party saw the collapse of democracy, amongst other features. They r bascially asking why democracy collapsed, and to what extent the depression contributed to this event.

Hope that helped =]

the depression had a relative effect on the collapse of democracy
it was all due to chancellor bruning in 1930-32 who, in trying to seek his own aims of remilitarization etc, paved the way for the nazis into the riechstag. It was then shlicher n papen who ensured its ultimate collapse by trying to restain hitler but got him into power instead.
As AJP taylor stated: "depression merely accellerated the collapse and highlighted teh fact that the wiemar was already dead"

mention Dawes plan and then how it was revised to Young's plan
(or maybe it was the other way round, history's my neglected subject)

you could mention how this and the Jewish-socialist-banker conspiracy
began (not really began but made worse) anti-semitic sentiment...

remember from 1925 till the depression Germans were living ok...
thats when the 'decadent' art, jazz and roaring 20s were happening

most middle class people didnt like that
and what they liked even less was when
they couldnt even by bread with their entire life savings
(it wouldnt have affected poor people much, as they
probably didnt have any savings anyway)

In this question make sure you focus on the impact of the depression. According to my teacher, who marked this the year it was in the hsc, many students simply wrote out a response to 'why did the Weimar Republic collapse'.

You basically have to talk about the impact that the depression had, such as unemployment, and how this added to the other factors that had already undermined the Republic. Basically things like the constitutional weaknesses such as proportional representation, which meant that no Weimar Government was able to form to solve the vast scale of problems caused by the Depressoin. Link this to the rise of extremisim on either sides as people became disillusioned with their government; make sure you include the rise of the KPD (I think thats what the communist party was called?) and the Nazis.

So basically you are talking about how the depression undermined the democratic processes in Germany at the time, and, ultimately, these factors culminating in the fall of the Weimar Republic.
