Whats the diff between chem 1101 and 1901? The syllabus looks identical? Is it just hsc chem all over again? There are only a few new things mentioned in the syllabus.

The ground covered would be similar, but 1901 would probably add a few extra anecdotes to it, maybe more complex questions in the exam, or whatever.

Is 1903 SSP? If so it's the same as 1901 but with some different, more challenging labs.

Yep it is. Thanks. Is entry to ssp dependant on first semester results for second semester? Cos im not too sure about getting 98.7+ while i have a decent shot at band6 in chem, so is there anyway to get into first semester ssp for chem withouth >98.7?

Whil the syllabus may appear identical the advanced stream covers it at a faster rate and with additional material.

SSP is just separate lab session with different experiments.

As for entry, it is dependant on first semester results for semester two, although mainly on CHEM1901 performance rather than overall. I've known people who have done no chem whatsoever getting into SSP with 99+ UAI, however non significantly below the UAI mark although I assume that if you're really good at chem you would be allowed in.

So im guessing when we enrol we can sort this out? It looks very similar to the stuff in hsc chem....does 1st sem chem just reaffirm everyones knowledge in chem?

Yeah, no need to be concerned about it until you enrol.

Yes, velox, concentrate on HSC/med entry stuff for the moment. Thinking too deeply about the back-up options is pretty useless until it's required.

CHEM1101 = Low marks
CHEM1901 = High Marks
CHEM1903 = Thankyou God

Oh, and for the record, the labs in SSP are INSANELY EASY when you have either:
a) A nice tutor
b) A smart friend doing the same experiment

it's pretty darn easy to stuff up an organic synthesis. There are many fine points to note there, and since you're assessed on yields and purities of your samples in 2nd semester by mal, and since what you end up with in terms of sample is determined by a force greater than you can comprehend, I would not use the phrase "insanely easy". For 1st semester yes, since it's a feel-good marking system, but 2nd semester is not at all as easy.

How did you go in 2nd semester for chem last year, keypad?

I'll guess 91.

And your insanely easy labs for SSP didn't seem to help your CHEM1903 mark.

Similar to stuff in hsc chem? well maybe, but the best thing to do is forget hsc chem and start anew.

There aren't too many differences between CHEM1101 and CHEM1901. CHEM1901 is supposedly meant to be more advanced.

However, PHYS1002 and PHYS1901 is a different story...

Yeah, SSP lab saved me from otherwise 8 straight hours of lab every second Thursday.
