Hi
Well, I was editting a digital picture that I'd taken and I accidentally pressed "save" instead of "save as".
I think that was the only copy of the picture I had
Is it at all possible to restore the picture again
or should I just give it up???

If it's still open, hit undo a few times until you get your picture back. If it is on your hard drive, do you have the original on a camera somewhere? Or have you sent it to anyone in the past you might have it ?

Otherwise, if you have overwritten your only copy, I'm afraid it may be lost for good.

Really depends what format your picture is in.
If it's in JPEG format, uh oh. It is a irreversible compression.
ie when u open a JPEG file, it will be different to the original image before saving as a JPEG file (looks crappier)

RAW is a reversible compression.
ie when u open a RAW file, it will be exactly the same as the original one no matter how many times you save and reopen the file.
However a RAW file is much larger than JPEG.

What the question meant was after the changes have been saved, is there anyway to retrieve the old file before saving the changes. It has nothing to do with lossy/lossless compression.

The short answer is no if you've already saved the file and closed the program.

I think I have to say goodbye to the original pic
It was a JPEG, and the editting program shut down for some reason before I could undo again.
shame, it was a nice one...

Thanks anyway

You're right, I've misread the question.

But I'm sure mangomousse has now learnt sth bout compression yes? :p
