Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a HDD Digital Camera. I've looked at these sony models:

DCRSR40 30Gb (ENTRY 30GB HDD HANDYCAM)

DCRSR60 30Gb (1MP 30GB HDD HANDYCAM)

http://www.sony.com.au/dis/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=30727#. There is a tab, Compare, which may help.

I don't know which one to decide on between these two. I am pretty sure I will get one of these, mainly because I can get a good discount from work.

I think there is a $150 difference in price.

Any suggestions on whether the DCRSR60 is worth the extra $150 or any opinions in general? :)

Unlike the hard-drive camcorders further up Sony's line, the DCR- SR40 doesn't include an accessory shoe, so you can't add a video light, a flash, or a microphone. Likewise, it doesn't include a line-in jack or analog-to-digital converter, so you'll have to move up the line if you want to use a camcorder to convert your old tapes to digital format.
The impression I got was that the SR40 seems to be purely stock, no attachments upgrades, while the SR60 introduced perhaps the addition of a mic on top?

What are you looking at doing by the way? Just point and shoot convenience?

The main reason is that I'd be going overseas. So I want to have something which I can have for general use (no pornos).

Should I be looking at something cheaper like JVC?

Well, quality wise/cost wise, I think miniDV ones are still probably the best way to go for the casual person, and since miniDV can be picked up in packets of 5 for about 10 bucks, and the quality is probably superior to these entry level hard drive recorders, I'd seriously consider them.

I heard some good reviews with the JVCs a while back, not sure on them though, havent seen the quality first hand.

Most HDD based cameras don't though, because they'd chew up that tiny 30 gb drive if they tried.
