I have this task in science where I have to discuss something. How do I approach the question? Is discussing in science similar to a discussion essay in english?

That is correct. Quoting from The Student's Guide to HSC Physics, Dicuss;

• Identify what is being discussed, explain it, and identify the key issues.
• Provide arguments for.
• Provide arguments against.

Provide 2-3 points for and 2-3 points against, each 'point' usually maps out to a mark in the marker's book

Discuss is Identify, Describe, Advantages, Disadvantages

You "Should" add 3 advantages, and 2 disadvantages, or vice versa, 3 is a good number, remember that.

The identify is basically re wording the question, usually going for or against and when you add the adv or disadv, just link it with "However"

Also follow this to answer your questions, for Advantages & Disadvantages make sure you have 5 between the two, so 3 advantages & 2 disadvantages, or 2 advantages and 3 disadvantages.

Discuss Question:

Identify
Describe
Advantages
Disadvantages

Assess Question:

Identify
Describe
Advantages
Disadvantages
Judgement

Evaluate Question:

Identify
Describe
Advantages
Disadvantages
Criteria
Judgement
