What mark do we enter in SAM for Distinction Courses? We only receive descriptions of our marks don't we (Credit, Distinction, HD)?

If you ask your lecturer really nicely, they'll tell you the mark they sent to the Board.

In most cases this is similar to your final HSC mark.

Otherwise, ask for your rank and estimate a mark using the published percentiles.

Tony at philosophy told us the roundabout marks for HD's, D's, Credits etc. If you look in your course outline book, it should say there if memory serves me right.

For some reason, distinction course marks entered dont contribute to the UAI calculation?

even when i remove *all* subjects *but* the distinction course, i get no aggregate mark calculation, whereas if i remove all subjects but (say) physics, then i get an aggregate mark calculation for that subject...

The candidature is too low in the distinction courses to be able to make an accurate assessment of the scaled contribution it would have towards the UAI when predicted by SAM. It does count to your UAI, it just won't be used in estimates provided by SAM
