For example, let's say for the first term exam I got 22% in english and ranked 45/50, term 2 comes around and I magically got 98% and top the grade. Would this mean my rank becomes 1st or does it just go up a few places?

just goes up a few places, at the end it's determined by where you are ranked AFTER all your exams and thats what the hsc takes. but that being said its not impossible to be bottom and then suddenly jump to the top after one exam, it's dependent on your average mark compared to everyone else's

no because ranks are based on overall marks
