With all this talk of HD games from XBOX360 and PS3 (and Nintendo Revolution i guess), I'm just wondering if it will acctually be pointful.

I can't imagine many households have an HD TV since they are ~$2000-3000 for just widescreen and $4000+ for 1080i resolution.

so what kind of TV do you have?

well just remember, the ps2 was released 5 years ago. none of the nextgen consoles are probably gonna be even out this year, so while not everyones gonna have an HD/prog scan tv straight away, it will happen. CRT/tube TVs are being phased out, in particluar the 4:3 ones. so there will be a fairly significant price drop come mid next year.

yep (well 5 years ago in japan at least)
perhaps HDTVs are cheaper in the US?
not too sure..... but anyways, i'm sure by the time the next gen consoles are available at a reasonable price (maybe a year or so after release?) that HDTVs will be relatively affordable

most programming will still be in standard definition I reckon, digital widescreen doesn't mean HD.

the only show i've noticed that is in HD is "summer land" on channel 10.

you sydney people prolly get more i guess...

remember '08 is the *PROPOSED* date for the total phase out of analog signal TV. although unlikely, it could change at any time.

There is a lot of flexibilty for the date.

Due to the low digital take up rate the federal government has relised that 2008 is an unrealistic target....It will probally be a few years later.

or there will be a rush of people buying digi tvs/set top boxes in 2007
cos its still like 2.5 years away at least
and thats ages
and the prices will go down so much between now and then...
so more people will buy as the get cheaper

neither the govt nor the tv networks have really been pushing DTV all that much so i'm not at all surprised
but i reckon by 07, HD set top boxes will be <$200

The problem is with manufacturers as well. Most tvs sold atm are still standard analog ones....
