I dont go to UNSW, but usually there is a final date in each semester when u can actually add or withdraw from subjects. So if that date is past, which is most probable then u have to wait till next semester starts. If UNSW does internal transfers then u can most probably fill forms and stuff to transfer to eng/arts next sem or either u will be told to come back after this sessions results then u can transfer.

Most importantly is that u should organise consultation with either faculty to discuss ur matter.

Is it possible to still combine an engineering degree with another degree such as an arts degree even though Semester 1 has already started ?

yes you can - as long as you have a credit average you can transfer to a combined Engineering/Arts program. you can do it from within the engineering faculty, so you don't need to go through UAC.

http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/current/transfer/schedule.htm

but there is really no hurry, as you would have already started your subjects for this session, so either do it at the end of Session 1 or Session 2.

The few people I know who are doing Engineering/Arts did all Engineering subjects in first year, then start doing arts stuff in second.
