My friend had to drop out of Uni because she was ineligible for the thing formerly known as hecs, I forget what it's called. But she's a permanent resident and her brother is in UNSW.

I thought Permanent residents were considered eligible?

And is there a specific sub-forum I should have posted this in? I couldn't find one.

Wow really? Because I had the 2005 Hecs-Help Booklet and it said Permanent Residents were eligible. At least I think so. I can't find it now.

But thanks for the links.

Yes, by HECS-Help I meant the loan, not the place itself. Sorry about that.

If her brother started pre-2005 the rules look like he will be able to continue the same as before but she will have to pay it all upfront.

Also depends on permanent resident status, might have been an easy switch to becoming a citizen depending how long they have been in the country. Bit late now though.

Yep - my g/f is a permanent resident (well her application is in progress but she finished high school here, etc) and she pays HECS fees but had to pay them up front. So the benefit of the govt subsidy is there but you don't get the interest free loan...

Thanks for the replies!

And to be completely off topic: Jules! I watched Pulp Fiction for the first time ever a few days ago. And... I didn't really get it. :) lol

But Jules was v. v. cool.
