almost all DVD burners [excluding dual layer ones] are under $150.

the differences between the brands will not be huge. It all depends on what formats you want to burn. "lite-on" uses sony parts so it should be decent, i guess.

technically "+" has more features, but is less compatible.

"-" is more compatible.

and "RAM" is good for backup but has slow burn speed. least compatible.

ones that can burn all 3 are around $200.

I fairly recently bought this Pioneer one: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2186

I haven't really used it very much yet, but the few times I have it's given me no reason to complain. Then again, I haven't stress-tested it or anything so my recommendation probably isn't worth too much on its own :)

It gets a pretty glowing review on that url above, and as far as I can see should be available for pretty close to the price you're looking for. It also seems to be available at most places, so it shouldn't be too hard to find in your travels :)

That's a dual layer drive, and does come in a little over the price you gave, but for the difference I reckon it's worth it. Completely up to you though of course, you can probably get a cheaper one if you don't need dual layer, though I have no clue which is the go there :)

dont buy one yet, still advancements in DVD burning, for example the blue ray burning can burn at incredible speeds + hold heaps of more data then the current DVD red ray burners

I've delt with liteon, sony, pioneer and LG.

I had problems in the start with the Liteon, however, my computer just chucked a wobbly at the time when the motherboard fried, but after that ordeal. The Liteon worked fine, equal to the pioneer and sony. However, the LG DVD dual-layer RAM +/- you name it is the best by far in quality and speed. Though costs slightly more. When it comes down to it, your prety right regardless of the brand you go with (even a $50 from eBay (maddog) brand works fine) but it all comes down to the warrenty, LG just replaces no question (they did with our DVD player), Liteon's not the best, but their firmware upgrade increased the drives speed a whopping 15% for us. I beleave pioneer and sony also have good warrenties (never delt with them before), but if the el'cheapo "maddog" brand from eBay were to hack it, I doubt theres little hope in getting it fixed.

But anyways, goodluck on your purchase. AS for bluray and the rest, you could wait for it to appear, but I beleave these new technologies will scrue the whole system something shocking, it'll be all out war between the 3 or so new replacements of DVDs, all being uncompatible with each other. Interesting to see which one will reign over all in the end.

heh true, You'll wait till bluray comes out, then another advancement will be coming out shortly when bluray becomes widely avalible and in the end, you'll be waiting all your life practically. As technology never ends in progress.

Still, I wish they got rid of the Floppy standard with something like zip, LS120, even flash!

That new mini-dvd thing from sony looks like a good replacement (the type their using in the PSP).

Not to mention the blu-ray vs HD DVD wars that will be going on.

Liteon is shit dont buy it. They make good cdrw's but crap dvd burners. I have a pioneer and it even burns the shittest of media at good speeds. The 109 should be coming out soon, so when that comes out the 108 will be cheaper. But i suggest just going to fluidtek or msy and buying a pioneer 108 or A08 if you have to have the fancy faceplate.

Can someone highlight the differences between the various competing formats, other than that they're incompatible?

Like when someone says DVD- is more versatile but DVD+ has more features, what exactly are they referring to?

DVD- was the original DVD format that was designed by Pioneer, now expanded to the group called the DVD Forum. It has a high compatibility rate with set top players, and has been around for longer.

DVD+ was introduced by the DVD Alliance - a group of companies (Sony, Dell, HP, and others) that joined together to create their own format since using the DVD- format required royalties. The format is designed ground up and allows for more features than DVD-.

A good example is DL burning in DVD+ media, and the usually higher burning speeds.

Also, if you want super cheap DVDs; you can't beat eBay. I scored 75 for $26.

But beware, about one in five scrue up. But it depends on what brand type you get. For example: the mona lisa brand are the worest, followed by Multipoint.

Theres only one batch which came high quality and that was the green Digital matrix brand.

In the end it comes out more economical, except if you end up with the mona lisa brand. I feel your pain if you do!

As for DVD disks, you can get 50 TDK DVD-R for $32 at MSY, my brother bought a pack he's using them and has had no troubles so far
