Ecosystems function in a state of dynamic equilibrium, which is the product of the interrelationship of the elements in the ecosystem: atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. A change beyond the limits of the equilibrium in any of these elements means that the system as a whole cannot exist in its original state. So all the elements operate harmoniously, but if there is a significant stress is just one of the 4 spheres, the entire ecosystem will have to change accordingly.
