I do Ext 2 Maths & Ext 1 English, but I hardly do any work for Ext 1 since I have basically 0 enthusiasm for the subject...I was just wondering what sort of effort you guys had to put in in order to get 45+ - was it simply a matter of reading the set texts, finding related material and then formulating a thesis, or did it involve a fair amount of extra research (such as going to uni libraries etc.)?

While I enjoy creative writing, I'm not enjoying the Crime Fiction genre at all really. And I find it unlikely that I'll have the time to do extra research. Would it be possible for me to get a Band E4? Or am I really better off dropping it and concentrating on my other subjects?
I'm more concerned about the Trials and the actual HSC exams, since Ext 1 English may absorb too much of my time and hence prevent me from gaining higher marks in my other subjects.

I have the 10U in mind that will count, but if I stuff one of them up, I find it unlikely that Business or SOR will "support" my UAI due to their low scaling...note: my subjects are in my sig.

well buddy chances are if your not putting in the time and effort the subject deserves then, your really not giving yourself a fair chance at maximising your potential in that subject area and should concentrate your efforts elsewhere. Although if with this iminimal effort your rigging close to or full marks, keep it.

I really enjoyed Ext 1 in Yr 11 and that was reflected in my mark/rank, but this year = crap content (I haven't yet done an assessment for Ext 1) :(

I guess it varies from module to module. I was lucky, a lot of the outside research I had to do was done in the comfort of my own school library. I didn't work at it in terms of hours like one does maths, but I'd certainly say it does require a considerable amount of thinking which differs from person to person.

To get a band 4 you'd not only need to understand the module, but be able to write pretty damn good sophisticated responses that show independant thought and "mastership" of the module. That being said, EE1 didn't "click" for me until a few weeks before Trials, so I'd definately say that attitudes can change during the year :D

And considering that you can always drop it... why not stick it out for now, and see what happens? If you really can't stand it after a while, then you can drop it. :) But I'd advise giving it a chance first. :)

I also did CF but I enjoyed it. I read each text twice (SBTS and TRIH). However, I didn't study too hard when it came to exams (I studied 2 days before the HSC). I just made sure I knew what the conventions were...I also made up an imaginative piece of writing to prepare myself for that particular question (instead of thinking about it during the exam). I'm sure you will do well in Ext 1. From the statistics, it looks like a fair few people are capable of getting band E4s. Talk to your teacher about it, as well.

Make sure you understand the conventions, the techniques, how to write responses, etc.

well you seem really intelligent and I wouldnt want to blur your vision for your UAI so I suggest you keep it. Just force it to be interesting by choosing independent texts that you are genuinly intrigued by. Personally I can't stand Advanced English, its all techniques and nothing about real English, but that's my perspective and I stick it out. I hope you make the right decision, goodluck buddy.

Thanks for your advice guys...much appreciated :)

I'll ponder over it for the next few weeks and I might see how I go in my first assessment. If my Ext 2 Maths workload gets too unmanageable, then I might drop Ext 1 English - but I guess I'll stick out for now.
