Hello can someone help me answer this question,

State the products formed from the electrolysis of aqueous sodium cholride.

and it would be really helpful if you could include the half equations and reduction potentials involved so i can thoroughly understand, thaaaaaaaaanks in advance.:karate:

Cathode: H2O + e- --> 1/2H2 + OH-

Anode: H2O -> 1/2O2 + 2H+ + 2e-
2Cl- -> Cl2 + 2e-


Products being formed are

Hydrogen gas at the cathode(-)
and
Oxygen and Chlorine gas at the anode(+)

QFT. Just to clear the things up a bit. Conc brine solution will see the oxidation of Cl-, and dilute brine solution will cause the oxidation of water instead.

I have another electrolysis question.

The question is:

Write the half cell equations for the electrolysis of AlF3

I answered it and said that the water equations would occur, as in

anode: H2O -> 1/2O2 + 2H+ + 2e-

cathode: H2O + e- -> 1/2H2 + OH-

instead of those involving the aluminium and flourine, but i just looked in the answers and it said the aluminium and flourine half reactions

can someone please explain why that is, or say if they think teh answers are wrong?
