I know english is compulsory and we have to do it in year 12. But my confusion is if I do 12 units altogether and if I receive a mark of 90s (Band 6) for 10 units of my total subjects except for english which I receive 85. Does that mean english has to count to my final HSC mark even though I get 90s for all my other subjects except for english?

yep. english always counts.

2 units of english must count towards your ATAR. Sucks so much for those who hate english, but it's excellent for those who love english. I've been hoping for ages they might do the same thing with Maths, but alas, not for a while!
