Today marks the 150th anniversory of the gold miner's revolt in Victoria Australia. The stockade grew from the outrage of the death of a fellow miner, James Scobie who was killed by James Bently the owner of the Eureka hotel on the month of October.
The miners elected Peter Lalor (and Irishman whos' brother James Fintan was a leader of the young Irelander rebelion) as there representatvie leader. He pointed out the injustice that the miners were subjected to, some of these were they heavy price for miners liscense which wasnt spent back on them adn their families, the way police treated them, they would neve own land and no voting rights.
On the 17th of October a meeting was called at the Eureka hotel, 4000 men gathered and outside police were gathering. They decided that they will push to have Bently's case brought to trial by lawfull means. As the meeting began to break up the police moved in to herd away the crowd, by now the crowd reched 10000. At this moment Bently was seen mounting his horse and riding to a police camp, after this the Eureka hotel was burnt to the ground.
On October 22, 1000 miners joined together at Bakery hill. Meanwhile on November 1st the Ballarat Reform league was create. Throughout november they meet with Gold commissioner Rede and Gouverner Hotham. The only result of these meetings were that Bently was found guilty and that other officers were found guilty of ill duties.
On november 29th, 12000 miners meet at Bakery hills and they decided they reformist had failed and followed Lalor's leadership. Here the miners burned their licences. This was the first time the southern cross flag was raised.
Rede's spies reported back and they found out about the burner of licences. The next day November 30th Red organised police to go on a license check. The check diggers closest to the police camps and arrest 8 miners. Following the raid thousands marched to Bakery hill where Lalor made a stand and told thoose who could not make a oat of alleigeince to the southern cross they should leave, thoose who could stayed. After they announced the oath the formed into various divisions and organised leaders. The also sent delegates to Rede to ask for the release of the 8 miners, Rede dismissed the demands.
The next day the mean marched to the Eureka mines and created a barricade all that day. In the camp that night there were tents and 500 men.
At noon Saturday December no attack had been called so many men left plaing to come back on monday. Rede's spies reported back of the men leaving. On Sunday 2 am the government army attacked with a force of 152 Infrantry soldiers, 30 calavry, 74 mounted police and 24 foot police agaisnt 150 ill equiped men with limited rounds of 1 to 2 bullets per mean. The attack was slaughter with 22 killed 12 wounded, Lalor survived. 4 government soldiers were killed.
The population abroad were disgusted with governments actions and supported the rebel miners. By popular suporter Hotham called of Material and cahnge the miners licenses to annual small payment.
Within a year Lalor was elected to parialiment, and in the 30 years to come through the spirit of the Eureka Stockade many democrat rights were won, such as right to vote for non land owners.

The Eureka flag has been flown at many protest, pickets or any meeting of workers the Eureka flag has on occasion been flown in Australia.
Also the flag has been used for neo nazi rallies who see it as white power bullshit, which i have heard was used for promoting white australia policy, maybe some one would clear this up.
But Ausflag said this to
I wrote thoose for the Marxist/anarchist forums i post on so its context is for that audience.

- Ausflag.com.auAccording to Frank Cayley's book Flag of Stars the flag's five stars represent the Southern Cross and the white cross joining the stars represents unity in defiance. The blue background is believed to represent the blue shirts worn by many of the diggers, rather than represent the sky as is commonly thought.

BTW i didnt have time to proof read this to late.Today, the Eureka flag is often used as a symbol of rebellion against authority by people at the extreme left and the extreme right of the political spectrum in Australia. It has been used in marches by neo-Nazis on the one hand and draped over the coffins of deceased Communists on the other.
