I have redhat linux 8, is it possible for redhat to access NTFS
or WinXP to access ext3?

To access NTFS drives from Linux:
http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/
To access ext 3 drives from Windows, look for ltools or explore2fs

Or, if you want write access as well (the previously quoted driver only supports reading) from Redhat -> NTFS:

It's not quite open-source, though, as it uses the MS DLL.

If you can recompile your kernel, theres an option for read and write NTFS (but write support is experimental i believe).

Write support is _very_ limited. You can only write to files that have already been created, and you can only stay within the bounds of the file, ie. you can't make the file any bigger or smaller.

Experimental enough for you?

there needs to be some standard in filesystems

ie. one that macs, windows and linux all can access and is more advanced than fat32

My vote's on ext3 for stability and reiserfs for speed. They're open standards.
