I know that I don't have to enrol in classes with external units, but is there ANYTHING else that I have to do besides be enrolled in the unit? Will they send something by post to me, or is everything done over the internet?

it changes from subject to subject
for most essays and things you have to post them in (or if you're only doing it externally because of timetable clashes you can put it in their little box at uni)
German for external is done online with a phonecall every few weeks from / to the teacher to practice your spoken German.
For most subjects there is/are also "on Campus" session/s where you have to attend uni for a day (generally a saturday)...
