Hi I was just looking at last year's question for king lear, and I'm confused >.<

Question 3 — William Shakespeare, The Tragedy of King Lear (20 marks)
‘Interpretations of texts can shift and change with time and place.’
Considering your time and place, reflect on the ways in which context has shaped your critical
interpretation of the prescribed text.
In your response, refer to TWO extracts from your prescribed text.

What does it mean when it says "TWO extracts"? is that two sections (scene/act) of the play or two productions of the play? or two sections of the play in two productions of the play? please help me subdue my bewilderment >.<

This caused a lot of contention in the 2004 HSC. Interpretations across the state varied in response to the quesion - as to whether it meant two lines, two scenes, two acts, two soliloquies etc. It was accepted that they meant that they wanted two things from the play, in relation to whatever else you wanted. As a general rule you should always have two interpretations/productions to relate to two scenes from the play.

In the end the Board allowed any reference to any two parts of the play - it is highly unlikely that they will ask a similar question this year after the furore surrounding "extracts". They'll be likely to be more specific - ie. asking for reference to two scenes.
