I've only seen 5 or 6 of them, but Raging Bull stands out as the best by a long, long way. What's your favourite movie by the master director Martin Scorsese?

taxi driver, easily.

closely followed by after hours. admittedly, i have a bias towards it since it resembles so many nights that i've experienced. it's definitely his most underrated.

I would've thought that Taxi Driver, along with Raging Bull (my personal favourite) and Goodfellas was one of his most highly rated.

Woops, misread. I haven't seen After Hours myself. I've only seen a handful of his many movies actually (Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Bringing Out the Dead).

once upon a time i would have said Taxi Driver. it's one of those films that stays in your mindset for a long time, it's damn powerful.

i'm a convert to goodfellas. i think it's nigh on perfectly made. brilliant in pretty much every aspect. fine acting, direction, story... it's all engrossing and plays excellently under many many rewatchings

i'm more someone who respects and admires Raging Bull than enjoys and regularly watches it

still haven't seen After Hours, Mean Streets or King of Comedy - to name a few...

after hours isn't available on dvd and is strangely hard to track down on video (i only found it at my uni library last year) but it's a must see. easily his strangest film; it almost evokes lynch in places.

since i'm bored, here's everything i've seen ranked (i like 'em all, though)...

1. taxi driver
2. after hours
3. goodfellas
4. raging bull
5. the king of comedy
6. mean streets
7. the aviator
8. gangs of new york
9. the age of innocence
10. casino
11. bringing out the dead
12. cape fear
13. the color of money

i'll attempt the rank system too

1. goodfellas
2. taxi driver
3. raging bull
4. casino
5. the aviator
6. gangs of new york
7. bringing out the dead
8. cape fear

i've actually seen the first 40 minutes of Mean Streets but tragedy struck and i'm still yet to see the end.
my early impressions would indicate i'd probably like it more than aviator above, so perhaps it gets the phantom 4.5 place

still need to see a lot of his movies it would seem...

i haven't seen casino in ages, hence the lower placement; it was the first film of his that i saw tho... i think.

i shouldn't have hyped up after hours too much; objectively, it's nowhere near as accomplished as raging bull and goodfellas, but i connect with it more. still very much worth seeking out.

you make it sound cool though
i'd like to see scorsese try 'lynchian' or 'strange'

kinda off topic, but it reminds me, has anyone else seen the Orson Welles adaptation of The Trial??
it's quite cool (i thought).

I'd say:

1. Casino
2. Goodfellas
3. Gangs of New York
4. The Aviator

Haven't seen the rest, so I won't rate them.
How come you guys don't like Casino? God, I love Ginger. I'd marry her.

I've resolved not to see The Trial until I've read it, but Welles himself did say it was his best work. I wouldn't know, I've only see Citizen Kane.
