Examples of english language techniques:

Slang: referring to the police as "pigs"

Symbol: nation's flag is a piece of cloth, but is also a symbol of that country's identity

Rhetorical: Is there such a thing as evil in the human child?

Paradox: Riches make men miserable

Parody: a serious news report written in the style of a disc jockey's script

Pun: arms (as in limbs on the body ) and arms (as in weapons)

Onomatopoeia: splash! Bang! Splinter! Whoosh! Etc.

Oxymoron: bitter sweet; love hate; bitter laughter

Layout of Text: in columns usually indicates a newspaper article
Irony: Spoken by a dying man who is unaware of his condition; "I think the future is a bright and beautiful time which I shall enter into with all my energies."

Euphemism: The old man passed away. (Rather than "died")
