Yes. Apart from the standard courses on finance 'theory', UNSW also offers subjects in financial planning (ASIC PS146 compliant). They usually discuss the different investment products available (eg. insurance, superannuation, managed funds) and analyse the pros and cons (eg. with respect to taxation). These include
FINS2643 Wealth Management, GENC3003 Personal Financial Planning and ECON3114 Superannuation and Retirement Benefits. I believe there will be another 3rd yr Finance subjects on financial planning too.

Yes... BUT... it is pretty useless.

They talk about things like equilibrium markets and teach you basic theory like how to negative gear.

The problem is that if everything were in equilibrium, you assume that everybody sees the same thing You assume there's no information assymmetry etc etc. That is not entirely true.

An even bigger problem is, to use the universtiy theories of evaluating whether a stock is overpriced, you need heaps of data. I can say with certainty that an ordinary person would not have the capabilities of obtaining these data.

Put it this way, if the university subject greatly enhances the investment skills of a person, all the finance students and lecturers wouldn't be where they are now.

And I say this because I am a daily trader myself. I can guarantee you that 90% of the finance students don't even know how to use basic technical analysis.

Of course at the end of the day, you need to have the personality and the guts to get off your ass and do something.

Macq got heaps of finance stuff, half of the units related are actuarial studies units (i think u can choose about half a dozen in an applied finance or economics degree). Alot of it is 3rd year and quite a few in 2nd year, but none in first year, just click on the links to find out more

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unitcodeprefix.php?edition=2006&ulevel=ug&unitCodePrefix=ACST

Economics does abit of finance, its mainly from an economic perspective, it also focuses alot on econometrics and financial econometrics if u major in it.:

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unitcodeprefix.php?edition=2006&ulevel=ug&unitCodePrefix=ECON

ANd of course, accounting has quite a few too

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unitcodeprefix.php?edition=2006&ulevel=ug&unitCodePrefix=ACCG

lastly, anyone doing finance has to do this:

http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/unit.php?edition=2006&unitCode=FIN310

If u do applied finance and economics, or any other double commerce degree, u can do most of what u want, but u cant fit all of them into a 4 year degree unless u want to graduate late.
