Firefox Quick start Guide

Now you have downloaded Firefox, here is a quick guide to
get you started using Firefox too its full potential.

Main features
- Extensions
- Mouse gestures
- Find as you type

Extensions
The great thing about Firefox is there is a huge community
helping to improve it. Extensions add features to Firefox
and generally makes it easier to use.

To get extensions go to Mozilla update.
Tools menu --> Extensions --> Get More Extensions

These are the one you should look out for.

Adblock
Right click on ads, adblock and they are gone forever.
you should use the wildcard character (*) to make sure
the entire ad server is blocked.

eg.
type this:
http://*ad.doubleclick.net/*

rather than
http://3ad.doubleclick.net/something.swf

All-in-one Gestures
This plug-in enables Mouse gestures.
I will describe them in further detail below.

FlashGot
If you use Getright, Leachget, or any of these download
programs. This plug-in enables Firefox support. Works
very well.

Download Manager Tweak
Allows you to customise the download manager.

Tiny URL creator (http://jgillick.nettripper.com/tinyurl/)
Adds a button so you can easy make tiny urls.
go to web site for more details on tiny urls

Net Usage Item (http://netusage.mozdev.org/)
Allows you to track your Internet Quota from Firefox.
Very good if your ISP is supported. Check
web site for support.

Tabbrowser Preferences
Allows you to keep all browser tabs in one window.
Use this if you like tabbed browsing.

NB: These extensions may not be available yet for Firefox 1.0.
Be patient and their respective authors will update the support.

Mouse Gestures
Mouse gestures allow you to draw symbols with your mouse to trigger
certain commands. It should be considered the equivalent
to keyboard shortcuts but with a mouse.

eg. if I hold down the right mouse button (this is default) and
move the mouse to the left then let go. The "back" command will
be triggered.
if I right-click and mouse down a new tab will be opened.

There are more complex ones where you draw an 'S' and you can view
page source.

check the options page of the plug-in to see what gestures are
available.

Once you get used to using them browsing will be much more intuitive.

NB. you must download a plug-in to enable mouse gestures.

Find as you type
This function is disabled by default in Firefox for some reason.
It allows you to search a page by simply starting to type what you
want to find.

eg. if I was on a long page of car models and i wanted to find a
"Nissan Skyline". simply start typing "Nis....." and your search
will be highlighted. This is much more confinement compared to opening
the find dialog and typing in the full search then clicking find.

To enable:
Tools menu --> Options --> Advanced --> Accessibility --> Find as you type

Hope you enjoy using Firefox, remember it is a non-profit organisation.

Firefox 1.0 will be released November 9.

I already have Mozilla, and I don't like how they're pushing Firefox (and the ugly webdesign makes it hard to do anything except, perhaps download firefox), and I find the whole thing feels like a pyramid scheme.

Why does anyone download a beta version, anyway?

Aye :D

malkin86: It's a pretty good Beta, not a standard bug-riddled/unstable one hehe, almost proper release anyway.

It's not so much that it's a Beta.. I just think it's suss, the way that they're trying to convert the world to Firefox. And the site is fugly and confusing, and overloaded with hyperbole. Why not just say "A new way to view the web" for starters? Rather than all this marketing spin.

converting the world to firefox makes sense. it has better support for plugins and 3rd party development (as seen above), better support for web standards, and it's more stable / less exploitable than IE (IE's market share is dropping away, hurrah).
