as far as I understand the person coming first in internals will get the highest external mark and so on, If I (coming 2nd out of 31) scored the highest mark, being 90% in the external exam and then the next highest score behind mine was say 75%.. would the person coming first in internals get 90 for their external and I would get 75? a much significantly lower mark..

Well assuming the person who came first internally came second externally then:

You: External 90, Internal 75
Other Guy: External 75, Internal 90

In the end you would end up with the same overall mark.

Depends on the gaps between the ranks. Your assessment marks are aligned between the top and bottom scores of your cohort, and the gaps between the marks of your cohort are made to fit the exam mark range. Say you get the top mark of 90, but you're ranked second. If the gap between you and first is very little, say 1 mark, then it's a solid chance your aligned assessment mark will be 89. If you're 10 marks behind in your assessment, then depending on the bottom exam mark of your cohort, your aligned assessment mark could be 82-83. So ranking second doesn't necessarily mean you will get the second exam mark as your aligned assessment mark.

Not necessarily true

This is wrong.

You wouldn't get 75.
But yes, the other person would get 90 as their internal mark if they are ranked first internally.

thats a pretty poor system then if people are severely hindered by their classmates and aren't judged on their actual individual performance.

So would I be right to say, if the following happened:

Internal
(A) 1st - 88%
(B) 2nd - 78%
(C) 3rd - 75% (me)
(D) 4th - 74%
(E) 5th - 70%

External
(C) 1st: 80% (me)
(A) 2nd: 60%
(B) 3rd: 54%
(D) 4th: 50%
(E) 5th: 49%

that I (being C here) would not receive 80% for my external but rather something 20-30% less then how I actually performed?

No, your external mark is yours. You would get an exam mark of 80 or whatever that scales to. Your assessment mark would be the one that changes, and if there was only these 5 students in your cohort, you would get an aligned assessment mark of about 60.

any ideas on what atar i would get if my cohort were to do poorly in the exams?
Potentially around 83. But dude seriously, chill out. The exams are done, so there's nothing you can do about it. Just enjoy the post HSC break and then see what you get when they release the ATARs.
