hi! I was wondering if anyone could please define between first, second and third generation rights.
I have some notes from someone who did the HSC last year, and he says that first generation rights are civil and political rights. Second generation rights are economic, social and cultural rights, and third generation are solidarity rights. Is this correct? Also, what are solidarity rights?

If anyone could help, it would be awesome!

1st Generation Rights-These are considered to be the most basic of all rights
E.g. Civil and political rights

2nd generation Rights-Considered to be positive or distributive rights
E.g. econmoic, social and cultural rights

3rd Generation Rights-Group or solidarity rights. These rights are not universally accepted
E.g. the right to have a healthy environment

Hope that helped
You were right :)

First Generation rights are also known as "negative rights". These are Civil and Political rights - they can also be described in terms of "things the government should not do". Hence, the right to freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom from this and that.

Second generation rights, or economic/cultural rights, are rights that are also considered "positive". As in, these are rights that the state/government should help with and act on, rather than refrain from. For instance - the right to education, the right to legal representation etc (note: not all of these rights exist as explicitly as these examples do in Australia).

Third Generation rights refer to rights of self-determination, rights to a healthy environment etc etc.
