Ok I got my economics tutorial exam back today and it was a credit. I wish to pose a question to any 2nd year or above uni students on what impacts are there on doing badly during the first semester?

Do different tutors mark harder than the others?

If you do badly in the first sem, or first year, it is often very hard to get back on a high average because you'll probably need faultless results to average out your bad results. say you want 85 as your average, and you got 75 in the first year, which is not bad by all means, but you want 85. then in the second year, you'll need 95 average to pull your average up (assuming your units are of equal values in all years). yeah, so generally you will need very very very good results to reach your goal.

Yes. either the course coordinator will somehow scale the marks, if there is a big difference between marks given by tutors. but generally they won't do anything unless it is like over 10 marks difference between tutors. if scaling does not apply, then tough luck. hope for a better tutor next sem :D

Depends. Ps get (most) degrees, and the person gets the job (not that that is the only reason for being at uni), but a student with a higher average is more likely to get to the interview than one with an average hovering just above 50, and then there is also the further/additional study consideration, be it honours or graduate.

Of course, given that it's your degree, the only mark that matters is the mark that you are happy/satisfied with.

At USYD 1st year units count 1/2 as much as 2nd year units, 1/3 as much as 3rd year units etc towards your wam.

Another question is do marks matter all that much?

Depends what field you want to work in, some employers/industries place more or less emphasis on academic marks.

Eg, for Accounting grads, academic results are mainly used in the application screening process (see if you meet the set criteria) - basically, good marks will get you to the first round interview, and from then on, its up to you.

Marks are the only exchangeable currency recognised by HD students. They'll do ANYTHING for more marks. :D
