small question : is a particle accelerator an example of fission or fusion?

likewise with nuclear reactors... nuclear reactors = fission yeah??

particle accelerator is a fusion reaction.

Fission is splitting of an atom.

Fusion=joining of atoms.

lolz, yea, as xayma said... and u r right abt fusion (edit:not fusion, fission... thx cm_tutor ;)) from nuclear reactor

but nuclear reactors have other uses too other than fission... i can create transuranic elements by bombarding large nucleus and forcing them undergo b- decay...

You mean fission from a nuclear reactor, not fusion. :)

ok so accelerator = fusion

i.e : join together

surfing says it produces "neutron deficient isotopes"

this is becoz accelerators shoot protons at a target rite? thus making the neutron : proton ratio smaller..?

.. yes??

yes...

and neutron rich isotopes are generally produced from nuclear reactors, which can also produce neuton deficient isotopes

i didn't think that particle accelerators created fusion. I thought this was only possible in extreme temperatures like that in the hydrogen bomb.

essentially, extreme temperature means very high velocity random particle movement... when they have enough velocity overcoming the electrostatic repulsion, fusion occurs...

linear accelerator can accelerate particles to such a great extent that the nucli can over come the repulsion and cause fusion...

phew~~~ dat some one better not be me... >.< '
u need a thermal neutron for fission... and u also need fissionable nuclei
