Can someone please just tell me why IRC doesn't work properly for me?

I've used mIRC as well as the Firefox IRC plugin, and both don't work; just comes up with 'Unable to connect to server (Software caused connection abort)'....

I really need help :(

Anyone that helps gets a free e-hug.

I'm using optusnet, behind a netgear wireless. I've taken out the router, and it's still fucked. I've turned on and off my firewall, and it's still fucked. I've re-installed miRC, and it's still fucked. Any words of wisdom?

PM one of the various mods who are also IRC operators, they'll help you. :>

Perhaps more information would help people help you, the server you are attempting to connect to and any port forwarding which you have configured.

Edit: Also, lol, Polok's comment amuses me. Funny how life works out isn't it? :)

Hilarious. I don't think I've ever seen anyone keep an online grudge (of which the original event really had nothing to do with them) for that long. I mean, it must have been over 8 months ago, yet you're still narky about it. Ever heard the saying 'get over it'?

Yeah, because I totally made his life hell and wouldn't have helped him if he asked. Even though I constantly have fights with people, I come here to help everyone, not make cynical comments. Childish.

Yeah, I'll copy and paste now. Was just wondering if there was a common problem that I've been missing.

Who said anything about a grudge? Grudges involve hard feelings towards the person, and I don't have any hard feelings towards you.

Besides, you said history was important, I'm just going quoting BOS history. :)

Also, eight months? Wow, how long are months for you? I counted just over four months (that is four months and less than a week).

Who said I'm not going to help you? I just wanted to have my fun first. :) Though, it's pretty funny how you call me childish, since the adult thing to do would've been to just ignore me. :) I didn't ignore that because as you said, I'm childish. :)

Also, are you behind a proxy server? If so, you'll need to configure mIRC to connect through the proxy. It's been ages since I used mIRC but I'm sure there's an options pane which deals with proxies.

Also, I'm going to assume you're connecting to Austnet for #houseofns, if so Austnet has been having some difficulties as of late (as in the past umpteen years), and sometimes connections are slow or unable to be completed. It might be a case of try again later?

But provide info on firewalls/port-forwarding as well, please.

I actually wrote a post saying 'I don't know about my firewall and proxies', at which point kami msned me with a link.

The info he sent said that a lot of virus-scanners block the ports 6666-6669 (which I didn't think about, because I didn't tell it to). Anyway, I unblocked the ports -- duh -- and now it works. The moral to the story is check things that you think are ok anyway.

Thanks for your help. :)
