Hey guys,

I was hoping you could answer some question to someone who is pretty naive about scaling.

If I flunk general maths, but do alright in all of my other (low scaling) subjects, does that mean my UAI will be below 30?

lol. I'm aiming for a UAI of 80, but I'm pretty sure I failed general maths. Is my UAI going to be so bad it wasnt even worth doing year 12?

Please be brutally honest~

Hey Stacie cool it down and less stress ok. There are many factors that are taken into consideration with the calculation of the UAI. Firstly, even if u have achieved 10% in General Maths, its not the end of the world.
How many units do u do? How are u going in ur other units? These questions need to be answered before u stress out.

......actually u dont need 2 stress out anymore at all, because either way, its done now and its out of the students control. Im sure ul b fine Stacie. U need one of these ---------->:D

Well I guess it is better to plan ahead first then put everything aside and enjoy life.

However yes there are some factors that should be considered.

Are you doing over 10 units? Meaning General Maths may not count.

How badly did you flunk General Maths?

How -alright- is your other subjects?

I just wrote out my whole message and then deleted it somehow! I'm a dumbass!!

Anyway, i only have 10 units and they are:
general maths 52% 32/56
cafs 90% 2/16
society and culture 93% 1/8
english adv 75% 9/32
food tech 70% 2/8

the ranks are my assessment ranks by the way, and the percentages were my trial marks. I think I did the same in maths and society and culture, but slightly worse in CAFS and hopefully better in food tech and english in my actual hsc exams.
S what does all this mean? Do you think there is any hope for me to get into uni at all? Please be brutally honest, I have been torturing myself:(

Sounds funny coming from me but what is CAFS ?

With those marks definitely you have a chance.

Maybe not the top universities but definitely some others. (depends on your exam performance and what course).

Your marks aren't as bad as i thought.

If you are doing low scaling subjects but perform well in them there is no problem in that. So don't worry if you think picking a low scaling subject only does harm.

It really comes down to the question of what course and what university.

CAFS is community and family studies.
I want to go to newcastle uni and study primary school teaching..most of the courses are around mid to high 70s, but I wanted to get over 80. Some of the courses are low 70s as well.
Do you think my UAI is likely to be 60s or lower?
Does the fact that I don't go to a good school affect my UAI dramatically?
I've been told that if you don't get in the top 25% in general maths, you get screwed over in your UAI

As said by the Board of Studies, the school in which you attend will not have any affect in the way their get your UAI.

How your school was ranked in 2002 is independent of 2003 as there is a whole new candidature.

Typically, if you went to a not so good school, your ranking will be better as a result. Conversely, if you went to a good school your ranking won't be as good but thats ok as it depends on your HSC exam.

Your General Maths will definitely have a big impact on you. How big depends how bad you really did. What type of mark do you think you will get in the HSC exam?

I would say you'd probably will get into the high 60's/low 70's.

But that would really depend on your General Maths performance.

Hard to say. no one can say that for sure. This year could be quite different.

Just remember that general maths is only 2 units and constitutes, at most, 1/5 of your UAI.

But to reach 80 UAI will require at least some reasonable performance rather than doing what it seems like 8 units.

Because the Food Technology might pull her down a bit :(

I think in my hsc exams I would have got in the 40s or 50s for general maths. I think that my food tech and english exams would have produced band 5s for the hsc exam, and cafs and society both band 6s. But who knows..for all I know I could have flunked all of the exams!

Well it all of them band 5 and 6's except General Maths, I would still have you have a chance of getting into university.

Whether you'd make your course is a hard to decision to say.

But the university option is DEFINITELY there :)

i too was devastated after the gen maths exam, i had done reasonably well all year, not BRILLIANT marks or anything, but coming top about 6th outta 50 or so, and ive only got 10 units too (2 of which is chemistry, which i am lucky to pass), so i really needed to rip the exam, which i didnt
all i am relying on now is (as horrible as this sounds) im hopeing everyone else screwed up worse than i did and a relatively good assessment mark
