Australian universities are classified into three tiers (or grades). The first tier consists of what is known as the Group of Eight (G8) universities.
These are (in order of the latest ranking by Asiaweek) Australian National University, Melbourne University, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, University of Queensland, University of Western Australia, University of Adelaide and Monash University.
These universities take up almost eighty percent of all government research grants and have the largest research output. In fact the G8 have an association of their own and their office is based in Canberra. These are the most prestigious and most sought after universities.
The second tier universities consist of established and still reputable universities such as University of Newcastle, University of New England, University of Woolongong, University of Macquarie, James Cook University, University of Latrobe, University of Tasmania and Flinders University.
In some aspects of research and teaching, some of these universities rank the same or probably better than some G8 ones.
The third tier universities are largely those which were once polytechs and were recently upgraded.
There are many of these scattered all over Australia. Some of the ones we are familiar with in Fiji because of their local operations are University of Southern Cross, University of Southern Queensland, University of Central Queensland, University of Sunshine Coast etc. <--- this is not a complete list of unis at this level
These are largely vocational in nature and do little or no research at all. So students are hardly exposed to cutting edge research in the sciences and humanities.
EDIT:
Many of the third tier universities are struggling to survive after they renamed themselves universities from institute of technology.
They are still essentially institutes of technologies with the word university added to their names.
I'll start.
