can anyone suggest any exercises or little 'tricks' that can help me remeber things like vertical exaggeration, gradients etc. i am constantly going over them, but they never seem to stick in my head!

there is no real trick to it. vertical exaggeration just remember it is vertical scale divided by the horizontal scale. gradients is just the change in height divided by the distance
