Hey guys I need some help with upgrading from 56k to broadband. I will be signing up with TPG but my problem is to do with the hardware.

What is a router? What does it do? Do I need one?
Do I need to buy a broadband modem if I have a router? (are these the same things?)

Thanks

a router allows you to share the internet connection without the main computer to be on...

i'd say do what the others say, get a wireless modem + router. save yourself the cabling and all! i have a separate modem and wireless router and its a bitch to have both hooked up and plugged in!

For TPG, the modem is a D-link DSL-200

A few tips:
1. Get a billion modem. Never buy a netcomm.
2. TPG are hell unreliable from what I've heard, have a look at exetel or iinet instead.

What do u mean unreliable, like when u connect to the net, it sometimes disconnects for no reason

i have found TPG very reliable...never had one drop out..i also think my router is very reliable...been on for about 4 weeks with no need to reset...wireless has becoem very easy to secure now...i use encryption as well as MAC address filtering (both done through the web interface) ...only poeple with their mac address entered into the tabel can obtain access :D

with Netspace.. not TPG.. no problems... atm

mine is netcomm NB5580Wplus4wireless too
Links to roommates comp..
i use the RJ45 jack for 100Mbps.. and easier config..
also use 802.11b for pda.. its handy.. cos i dun hav a laptop.. umm streamin playlist via wma of my winamp playlist..

roommates are using Usb 802.11b from netgear.. WEP encrypt not MAC filtering for me..
cos keep changing comps and adding users.. although i live in whoop whoop.. noone can even find my wireless network..

only thing i dun lik is the AC- adaptor lik its annoying in the wall.. there are other AC adaptor designs i wished they had used..
