Agoge - The strict military training and education undertaken by all Spartan males once they reached the age of seven.
Apella – A general assembly which could be attended by any Spartiate over the age of 30. It met once a month.
Apothetae – Translated as “place of rejection”, a chasm where children, more commonly males than females, who were deformed or deemed weak by their parents and elders, were thrown.
Bibasis – An exercise performed by Spartan women. It involved jumping up and making their heels touch their buttocks.
Eirene – After the age of 19, boys were given this title. They were allowed to supervise the training of younger boys and to punish them.
Ephor – An official of ancient Sparta. Five were elected each year and acted like govenors.
Eunomia – Meaning “Good Order”, the Spartan name for their lifestyle.
Gerousia – The Council of Elders in Sparta. Consisted of 28 life members who could be elected after the age of 60 as well as the two kings.
Helot – Slaves or serfs in the Spartan social structure. They were the inhabitants of land that the Spartans had conquered.
Homoioi – Otherwise known as Spartiates, were full citizens.
Hoplites – Middle class armed soldiers of the Spartan army
Kleros – Portion of public land owned by a Spartiate and managed by his Helots.
Lacedaemonians – The inhabitants of the territory belonging to the Spartan state, the valley of the Eurotas River in central Peloponnese and other conquered territories such as Messenia.
Laconia/Lakonia – The territory owned by the Spartans.
Paidonomos – Supervisor of young Spartan men undertaking the Agoge.
Periokoi – The middle/working class of Sparta. They enjoyed freedom but were not full citizens.
Syssition – Public meals held outdoors. Attendance to these was compulsory and each Homoioi had to make a contribution of wine, grain or fruit from their kleros every month.
