WORCESTER— Three suspects in a weekend assault on Elm Street have been released from custody after posting bail.
Police said one victim of the attack, which occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday near 98 Elm St., had part of his ear bitten off. The other suffered cuts and bruises on his face and head after being struck with a golf club, according to investigators.
Police arrested James M. Zwicker, 23, of 14 Progressive St.; Darryl P. Servideo, 21, of 77 Elm St., Apt. 5, and Justin Laganelli, 21, of 830 West Boylston St., Apt. 11. Each was charged with mayhem and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a golf club.
Mr. Zwicker was arraigned Monday in Central District Court, and Mr. Servideo and Mr. Laganelli were arraigned yesterday. All three men were released from custody after posting $5,000 cash bail and were ordered to have no contact with their alleged victims, according to court records. The suspects’ cases were continued to March 10.
The victims were identified in court records as Loren Rutherford, 26, and Michael Lydon, 25. Both men were struck with golf clubs, police said. Mr. Lydon also had part of his ear bitten off, according to court documents. At least one of the victims underwent hospital treatment, according to police, who declined to identify the two men.
The suspects were arrested at Mr. Servideo’s apartment after police traced a license plate number provided by one of the victims. Police said one of the victims positively identified the three men after they were arrested.
The assault outraged community activists and was a topic of discussion at a Monday night meeting of an anti-violence group, Ending Violence Together, which called for a greater police presence in the Elm Street neighborhood.
