You should be able to find it somewhere in your textbook

Basically it means you're doing your backup data more than once. For example you burn the exact MP3 files to 3 different CDs a, b, and c.
A is the grandfather, B is the father, C is the son.

if u do that then you just have 3 copies which isnt the grandfather, father etc thing

its pretty hard to put into words but basically once you backup you keep the 2 versions prior to the most recent backup backup

the most recent backup is the son, the backup before that is the father, the backup before that is grandfather

once you backup again the grandfather version dissapears, father version becomes the new grandfather, the son version becomes the father and the newest backup becomes the sun

The aim of the grandfather, father, son or GFS backup strategy is to allow the data to be restored back to virtually any previous state.

For exampe the grandfather set would commonly contain 12 tapes (or disks or CDs or whatever). These are complete backups made at the end of each month. The father set would contain 4 tapes, made at the end of each week. These could be full or partial backups for the week, depends on the data. The son set contains 4 tapes, one for each day of the week, except Friday when the father backup is made (assuming a 5 day working week) these could be partial backups for the day or full backups.

If partial backups are used then if the data needs to be restored you first restore the most recent granfather, then father then son.

Think about what happens if restoration is needed but one or more of the backups are stuffed.

Hope this helps.

hehe its really is pretty simple....

its called grandfater, father son with each tape representing different generations (grandfather being the oldest) what wasnt really said was that it isnt limited to 3 tapes..most organisations would use over 20 tapes so youd have generations go back to great-great-great grandfathers etc.
