i need to Plot length (y-axis) against (period) (x-axis) for my results in the attached file. I tried to do it on excel but it keeps giving me some retarded graph, i also tried in word to no avail. Can someone give me a hand? thanks

this is the pendulum experiment which u calculate the value for "g" right?

it is really "t squared" against "l"

Its your results that are wonky. Because all your lengths are very close together the errors in measurements are bigger than the changes in distances.

Result a graph that looks wrong but is corrrect for your data. You are going to have to explain the errors.

oh ic, so for the graph to have looked normal, i should have done say the pendulum lengths of 0.25m, 0.5m, 0.75m, 1.0m? Then would I have ended up with a decent graph?

That would have been more reliable. Also to have repeated each length a number of times.

Did you average periods from say 10 swings?

now i see, ill add that to my conclusion. Yes we did ten swings for each length. We were under the impression that the length of the pendulum should have been the same each time. lol. Now i know that we should have used about 5 different values for the pendulum length, then taken the average from 10 swings (which we did) and then repeat each length say, 3 times.

Does your teacher just ecpect a conclusion or a discussion as well?

probably both....hmm ive forgotten what a discussion is.....haven't done any pracs for ages

Discussion or Evaluation is where you talk about what went wrong and how you could improve it, what was correct eg what you controlled to make it valid or what should have been controlled. Possible further experiments etc.

Your conclusion shouldn't be much more than a response to the aim.

But then your teacher might have other ideas

what does t² against L show us?

whether its an inversesqaure or sqaure proportion. If the T^2 vs L graph is not a straight line, then that relationship is not squarything. But if memory serves correctly.. it should be a sqaure proportion.

General method so you can apply it.

Place your equation in the form
y=mx+b
From your graph T² is your y
l is your x

T²=ml

Rearrange your original formula into this form (square it) and you should come up with

m=_________/___________

If you can't work out m then post again.

graph r the easiest part of physics... just a matter of working out a little info.

geez u dont need to know ur exact results for the exam!! results differ a lot in different experiments and in an exam when they ask u to outline an experiment u just need to give an overview of ur results in general and give reasons for the results..blah blah...how to improve...

this isnt for the exam, its for my practical book. The teacher needs to mark it. I'd rather understand it properly.
