In our Exam we had yesterday there was a question something along the lines of:-
Find the acute angle formed between the tangents of ln x at 2 and 3.

I know this is possible through a long and drawn out method but I thought it was unfair to expect all the 2u students to do this when the 3u students simply had an easy formula they had learnt to substitute into.

I checked the syllabus and finding the angle between two lines is an extension only topic. Is my school allowed to do this? Do I have the right to complain and have the question taken off the paper. It was worth four marks and I think it was unfair to give 3u students such a massive advantage.

I think you will find that tests often have 3 unit work asked to be proven in 2 unit, however most times they guide you with what to do (such as last years CSSA paper that asked to find sin 2@). If the question did have a method to figure out the answer (that involved methods a 2 unit student has been taught) other than using the formula given in 3 unit maths, then yes it should be a valid 2 unit question. However, if the teacher wanted you to use the 3 unit formula, or if there was no possibly way to solve it using 2 unit methods, then Id say its worth and appeal.
